Barcelona have expressed their interest in Mascherano but Reds boss Rafa Benitez is determined to keep him at Anfield especially with Real Madrid expected to make their move for Xabi Alonso.
Alonso has told Benitez he wants to go to the Bernabeu with reports claiming he could be allowed to join the 'New Galacticos' if they come up with £35m.
There had been reports that Mascherano would be offered a new improved deal to ensure he stays at the club but with him just 18 months into a four-year deal signed in February 2008 that appears to be unlikely.
