Arbeloa moves from Kop to Real Madrid — is Xavi next

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa has made the move to Real Madrid after the two clubs agreed a £3.5m fee — now the waiting game begins as to whether or not Xavi Alonso follows him.

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Real Madrid to sell the right-back to the Spanish club, where he started his career.

Spain star Arbeloa, 26, who signed for the Reds for £2.6m from Deportivo La Coruna in 2007, had one year left on his Kop deal and could have left on a free next summer.

Boss Rafa Benitez sanctioned the move in the light of securing the singing of Glen Johnson, with Philipp Degen fit again and Jamie Carragher who can also slot in at right-back.

Meanwhile, Benitez has spoken to Alonso and has made it clear he wants to keep him at Anfield. "I talked to Xabi and told him, as he can see here, that the fans love him and said to him ‘Maybe you have to stay," said Benitez.

"You can see he is a really good player and I’ll be really pleased if he stays. All the players and his team-mates want him to stay. If we keep Xabi I will be very pleased." [Source]
